37th General Assembly "Generation to Generation"

DESCENDING OVERTURES 

 

Descending Overtures are sent to the presbyteries by the General Assembly. This document should be distributed for information at each presbytery’s fall meeting, and voted upon in the winter meeting. Presbyteries may debate the substance of a descending overture as to adoption or non-adoption, but may not amend the overture. A ballot for the vote count of commissioners is also enclosed, which should be certified and returned to the Office of the General Assembly as soon as possible following the winter presbytery meeting.

  • Overture 17-C (on revising the Preliminary Position Paper on Human Sexuality and appointing an ad-interim committee to review and revise the current Position Paper on the Sanctity of Marriage)

All commissioners completing their registration for General Assembly by May 31 are assigned to a Standing Committee by the Nominating Committee. Except for a few items, all the business coming to the floor is first discussed and recommendations are made in these Standing Committees that meet on Wednesday, June 21, from 3:15–5:00 p.m.

Commissioners should check their Standing Committee Assignment and prepare for the Committee meeting by reading the appropriate section(s) of the Handbook.

Forms received after June 19 may not be posted until later in the week due to the multiple demands on staff during the Assembly.
